Chapter eleven

While Everett followed Gretchen down the stairs, he processed Lacey’s odd request—or tried to. Besides the fact that his mind lingered on Gretchen’s passionate response to his kiss, Lacey’s request didn’t make sense. Since Noah was already deceased and already safe and secure in the procedure room, what could have become urgent during the autopsy?

Had Dr. Elrod found more biological evidence they needed to rush to the lab before it degraded too much? If so, wouldn’t she have used her other team members to handle it, not Gretchen? She’d already said she couldn’t be a part of the autopsy. So there could only be one reason she needed her. She must have discovered something on Noah’s body that could lead them to the killer and that she felt Gretchen might have some insight into.

God, please give them wisdom and direction so that Noah’s death won’t be in vain.

At the bottom of the stairs, Gretchen paused and looked back at him. “You said you secured the building. But do we still need to be on the lookout for whoever called the deputies away from us?”

“No, we’re good. Some of my men are outside at the entrance to the complex. They won’t let any vehicles in unless they’re government vehicles.”

She nodded then turned right and went down the hall to the third door on the left. Everett quickened his pace to keep up with her, his heart pounding against his ribs. He didn’t want to tell her that there still could be a possibility of attackers getting on the property if they came in on foot. He didn’t want her to fret over anything else tonight.

When they reached the door, Gretchen paused and took a deep breath before pushing it open. Everett followed her inside, the odor of antiseptic, blood and other bodily fluids burning his nostrils. Unexpected coughing and gagging doubled him over until he tucked his face inside the collar of his shirt. No one else responded this way. How could anyone become accustomed to the smell of death around them all the time?

“You okay?” Gretchen faced him and placed her left hand on his right forearm.

He nodded even though his stomach threatened to launch an attack. A metallic taste filled his mouth and caused saliva to puddle in the back of his throat. He didn’t want to vomit. He needed to get this ridiculous response under control. “Yeah.”

“Get a mask.” Mike pointed to a box on the table beside the door. “That should help a little.”

Everett reached into the box and snatched out two masks. He needed double coverage here if he was going to keep it together and not make a fool of himself in front of Gretchen and her team. They wouldn’t expect him to be unphased by this experience, but still, he wanted to get through it looking as much like a professional as he could.

Gretchen moved closer to her coworkers, her shoes squeaking on the tile floor, but Everett stayed at the door and donned the masks.
